At Baker University, Justin Kidd had the opportunity to participate is a variety of project that took learning beyond the classroom. These include projects for Cerner, Wal-Mart, and Sprint North Supply.
Cerner - Spring 2004
In a partnership with Baker University, William Jewel College, Park College, and University of Missouri - Kansas City, Cerner provided a program called the Software Development Life Cycle Experience. Students were divided up into one or more teams per school and instructed on all aspects of the iterative software development lifecycle including planning, implementation, testing, and deployment. Each class period on Wednesday nights was devoted to a different aspect of software development with potions relevant to a particular role on a team. Some of the roles included Software Engineer, Certification Analyst, Project Manager, Product Manager, and Software Architect. An example something being taught to one of these roles is the Project Manager learning how to develop a project plan using Microsoft Project. The ultimate goal of each team was to develop a piece of software that would run on the Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 Operating System and access patient information through a wireless connection. Overall, each participant including myself gained a great deal of knowledge to take out into the workforce.
Wal-Mart - January 2003
In this project the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Ottawa, Kansas partnered with two teams of Baker students to find a solution to both internal and external processes at the distribution center. Justin was on a team focusing specifically on the external processes of the distribution center. His team worked to analyze the current process, find inefficiencies, and then to provide a cost effective solution to Wal-Mart to help correct these problem areas. The other team focused on internal processes. They also performed analysis, discovery of inefficiencies, and provision of cost effective solutions.
Sprint North Supply - Fall 2003
During this project Baker students analyzed the order taking processes of EDI, phone, and Internet. They analyzed each process, found various ineffiencies, and determined the most cost effective solution to improve efficiency.
